At the center of our work is our pioneering use of ice‑based thermal energy storage (iTES), an emerging cooling technology that delivers reliable, energy‑efficient, and cost‑effective refrigeration. Using this innovation, we are building walk‑in cold storage units designed specifically for smallholder farmers. These units help reduce post‑harvest losses, maintain produce quality, and open doors to higher‑value markets.

About the Role: Design Engineer

We are inviting motivated, curious, and collaborative Design Engineering Students (DES) to join our dynamic international team. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys solving off-grid challenges, loves hands‑on experimentation, and is excited by the opportunity to design systems that must be both technically sound and commercially viable.

As a DES, you will contribute directly to the development of a novel solar‑powered refrigeration unit. Your work will span mechanical, structural, and thermal‑fluid design, alongside research and supply‑chain evaluation. You will collaborate with engineers in the United States, agricultural entrepreneurs, and local suppliers to ensure the product is safe, functional, affordable, and ready for real‑world use.

  • Guide designs from early concepts to fully functional prototypes.
  • Support the development of the ice‑thermal energy storage cooling system.
  • Perform quick, practical engineering calculations (mechanical, structural, and thermal) to evaluate ideas before detailed design begins.
  • Research insulation materials and methods, considering cost, durability, transport, and assembly.
  • Create detailed 3D CAD models and 2D engineering drawings for the cold room structure, component layout, and cooling system.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive Bill of Materials (BOM).
  • Work with civil engineers on interior and exterior wall design, framing, and structural elements.
  • Define assembly steps and produce clear documentation for cold room construction.
  • Build strong relationships with East African suppliers to establish a reliable, cost‑effective local supply chain.
  • Provide regular project updates to senior mechanical engineers overseas and to the company team (meetings typically held between 9–10pm EAT).
  • Participate in design reviews focused on mechanical systems, heat transfer, and thermo‑fluid performance.
  • Ensure all designs meet customer requirements and comply with national and local standards.

Key Responsibilities

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, agricultural engineering, or current senior‑year standing in one of these fields.
  • Strong foundational understanding of heat transfer and mechanical design principles.
  • Demonstrated experience creating CAD models and drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Access to SolidWorks 2022 or later (student version acceptable).
  • Excellent verbal, written, and cross‑cultural communication skills.
  • Willingness and ability to visit suppliers, build relationships, and negotiate effectively.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • Familiarity with HVAC systems, refrigeration cycles, and thermodynamics.
  • Demonstrated project experience in mechanical design (portfolio or sample work encouraged).
  • Experience with embedded hardware such as microcontrollers, instrumentation, or PLCs.
