In Uganda’s Luwero District, agriculture sustains rural communities, yet post-harvest challenges often prevent farmers from realizing the full value of their crops. Since 2022, entrepreneurs Kaye and Ronald have turned these challenges into opportunities. Through the Farmer Post-Harvest Innovation Center (FARMIC), they are proving how solar-powered innovation can transform livelihoods and strengthen rural economies.
Partnering with Farmers
Kaye and Ronald collaborate with more than 500 smallholder farmers cultivating maize and beans. By aggregating over 10 tonnes of grain each week, they provide farmers with a dependable market for their harvests. This partnership reduces food loss, builds trust, and fosters collaboration across the community.
Harnessing Solar-Powered Technology
In 2020, an 8KW solar-powered inverter was introduced at FARMIC, enabling clean energy milling through the efforts of Ecolife and Smart Village, with support from Innovate UK. With this technology, Kaye and Ronald process grain sustainably, eliminating reliance on diesel fuel. Today, they mill up to 2,000 kilograms of flour daily, ensuring consistent production while protecting the environment.
Supplying Local Markets
The flour produced at FARMIC reaches local schools, homesteads, and village retail shops, providing affordable, high-quality food. By bridging farmers to consumers, Kaye and Ronald strengthen local economies and contribute to food security in their district.
